Students really look forward to learning center time! Children are working on skills in all areas of development, learning and having fun during learning centers.
For the past month, students have been enjoying building with legos on our lego table during learning centers!
Each week for our letter focus, some of the activities we work on include: identifying the letter (uppercase and lowercase), writing the letter (uppercase), producing the letter sound, brainstorming and finding things in the classroom that begin with the letter, building the letter with wood pieces, writing the letter in a sensory material and making a craft at the art center for the letter. Each week, we also do a yoga pose for the letter of the week, which gives students a motor break and helps them focus.
Last week, our letter focus was "S"! Students noticed that there are many things that begin with "S"! "S" is for snake, and that helps us remember the sound that "S" makes. Children had fun pretending to be snakes, slithering around the room, while making the "S" sound. We also did crab walking, and kangaroo jumping to get our wiggles out. Students made an "S" is for SNAKE craft at the art center. "S" is for stars. Throughout the week, we sang "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" at circle time. In our journals, we practiced sorting stars by color during math. Next week, we will work on sorting by size. We are working towards knowing how to sort items by two different attributes, and telling the reason/rule. Students made a "S" is for STAR craft. At the ABC learning center, pre-K students practiced writing "S" and the letters of their name in sparkly soap bubbles, which was lots of fun. To write "S": 1. Mr. Smiley reminds us to start at the top! 2. Make a little curve 3. Slide down to make a little curve turn the other way This week, our letter focus will be "Z"! "Z" is for zebra, zoo, zipper and zip-line! What sound does "Z" make, and what else can you think of that begins with "Z"?
WOW!! Children were SO excited to play on our new JMS pre-K/K playground today!!!!! We love all the climbers and slides, and the cool bridge that looks like a fish! There are gears, drums, a steering wheel and a little buddy bench!
Superintendent Leone and Region 6, we can't thank you enough for our awesome, new PLAYGROUND! What an asset to our pre-K program to help our little learners grow!! We have been working on letter "V" including how to write "V", things that begin with "V" and the sound that it makes. During science, we did an erupting volcano experiment!
The materials that we used included: empty water bottle play dough paint sand baking soda vinegar red food dye Little scientists made predictions, and formed conclusions about what happens when baking soda mixes with vinegar. It was so much fun!! Click on the button below to find a similar erupting volcano science experiment, and try it at home! At the art center, we used red finger paint to make an erupting volcano out of the letter "V"! Pre-K friends made special keepsake holiday ornaments for their families! Students chose the shape, stamped the first letter of their name, and added some glitter to their beautiful ornament.
