Students learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. through books, activities, and watched a nonfiction video about Martin Luther King, Jr. on BrainPopJr on th smart board. Preschoolers also viewed photographs of MLK on our smart board. We learned about his dream for equality, and talked about how our differences make us special. After reading The Crayon Box That Talked (DeRolf), we made our own special box of crayons! Students brought home a MLK mini book to read at home with their families.

In December, we read many versions of The Gingerbread Man! Students strengthened fine motor and creative skills by making a gingerbread man at the art learning center. Just like Mat Man, the gingerbread man has two arms, two legs, one body, two eyes, one nose, and one mouth! Knowledge of Mat Man helped students create their gingerbread men. We worked on story retelling the the version by Schmidt. One of the versions we read was The Gingerbread Man: Loose in the School by Laura Murray. Then, we went looking for the gingerbread man because he was loose in James Morris School! Preschoolers looked everywhere: the gym, art room, nurses office, and even Mr. Chapman's office! After reading the last clue, we found him and his gingerbread friends in our classroom ready to be frosted, decorated, and eaten! As the class was decorating their gingerbread men, one student commented, "This is the best day ever!" We had so much fun!
Throughout the month of November, preschoolers learned about occupations and community helpers. Occupations that preschoolers learned about include: mail carrier, construction worker, doctor, veterinarian, dentist, farmer, chef, baker, plumber, mechanic, police officer, fire fighter, engineer, pilot, and more. In the dramatic play house center, students dressed up as various community helpers. In the fine motor and math center learning center, students pretended to be bakers by counting and adding play dough chocolate chips to cookie play dough mats. At the science learning center, students pretended to be doctors, and examined x-rays of human and animal bones, and teeth. Children also pretended to be dentists by flossing and brushing egg carton teeth.
Parent volunteers were invited to visit our classroom and share about their occupation. It was fun to have Mr. Paletsky visit, teach us about farming, and share lots of pictures of his farm in Morris. Mrs. Leonard visited, and taught us about being a Broadway manager. She showed the class lots of pictures on a slideshow, and props from the Broadway shows. Students even received memorabilia from The Lion King and Aladdin! Thank you parent volunteers! |
