We had fun with egg, and Easter-themed hands-on learning activities! Picture books that we read include: Pete the Cat: Big Easter Adventure (Dean), Guess How Much I Love You (McBratney), and Rabbityness (Empson). We made coffee filter eggs, and decorated real chicken eggs. We made coffee filter bunny peeps, which are displayed in our classroom window, and at the Morris Post Office. During music and movement, we used our egg shakers for the song "I Know a Chicken" by the Laurie Berkner Band. Lastly, Mrs. Greenwood visited and read us a story during circle time!

This week, we explored a dinosaur thematic learning unit. For music and movement, students pretended to be dinosaurs, dancing and singing to "We are the Dinosaurs" by The Laurie Berkner Band. At our sensory center, students pretended to be "paleontologists," as they dug and brushed away sand while looking for fossils. We watched BrainPOPJr. to learn about fossils. Then, students used dinosaurs and play dough to create their own (pretend) dinosaur fossils. For math, children continued and created dinosaur patterns. We read many dinosaur picture books, including: Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs (Barton), Dinosaurs Love Underpants (Freedman & Cort), and several books from the How Do Dinosaurs…? (Yolen & Teague) series. Students had an opportunity to be authors and illustrators, writing their own dinosaur stories!! Five Huge Dinosaurs Fingerplay Five huge dinosaurs, looking fierce and mean The first one said, "I eat things that are green." The second one said, "I hatched from an egg." The third one said, "I have very strong legs." The fourth one said, "I can fly through the air." The fifth one said, "I give everyone a scare." THUMP! THUMP! Along came Tyrranasaurus Rex that day, And the five huge dinosaurs all ran away! "R" is for rocketship! Collaboratively, students created large rocketships. Preschoolers sang and danced to one of their favorite songs: "Rocketship Run" by the Laurie Berkner Band. We also sang "Row, Row, Row Your Boat". Students worked on letter formation, identification, and sound, as they traced letters with racecars. "R" is for racecar! At our science center, we explored rocks and minerals. Little scientists examined rocks and minerals with magnifying glasses, and drew pictures of what they observed. We read Planting a Rainbow (Ehlert), and collaboratively created our own rainbow garden. Each student chose a color flower to "plant," and added details such as a stem, leaves, grass, clouds, a sun, rainbow, and insects. Each child signed their name near their flower art. Our rainbow gardens are displayed in the hallway above the preschool cubbies. We explored our five senses through music, wellness, art, and literacy. We read picture books about the five senses, and created a five senses self portrait. Bells to hear, eyes to see, candy to taste, dried beans to touch, and a scented pom pom to smell. On our Smart Board, we learned about the five senses on BrainPop Jr. We worked with Mr. Loomis during instrumental music enrichment, and used some of our senses to explore instruments. In particular, it was fun for students to close their eyes, and listen to the rain stick instrument! During wellness enrichment with Mrs. Wright, we played a game where we had to use our sense of hearing, smell, and touch to identify foods; we couldn't use our sense of sight. Students identified foods such as a carrot, pasta, and yogurt, and them placed them in the corresponding food group. It was a fun game! |
