We enjoyed many Halloween-themed activities in preschool! We read the book Go Away, Big Green Monster by Ed Emberly, and watched it on our smart board. Then, we worked on spatial understanding, sequence of events in a story, and fine motor skills by making our own big, green monsters! Just like the sequence in the story: Two big yellow eyes... a long bluish greenish nose... a big red mouth with sharp white teeth... two little squiggly ears... scraggly purple hair..." We learned and practiced The Itsy Bitsy Spider nursery rhyme. We watched it on our smart board, and used our body and hands to make movements as we sang the song. We read The Itsy Bitsy Spider by Iza Trapani. The book has many more verses that the original nursery rhyme song. Nursery rhymes and books with a lot of rhyme, rhythm and repetition help children learn language patterns quicker, and more easily. We admired glitter spider webs that older elementary students made with Mrs. Sweet, and decided to make our own. We used glue and silver glitter to create our own representations of spider webs! Mrs. Greenwood visited us during story time, and read The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams. We had so much fun singing, using fine motor skills, and gross motor skills to help tell the characters and events in the story. We learned the Five Little Pumpkins song and finger play! Fingerplays help develop memory and recall skills. The children show word meaning through simple actions and finger movements. This fingerplay also helps us learn how to count! Students enjoyed the fingerplay so much that we decided to use our fine motor skills and creativity to make Five Little Pumpkins art. Five Little Pumpkins Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate. The first one said, "Oh my it's getting late." The second one said, "There are witches in the air." The third one said, "But, we don't care" The fourth one said, "Let's run and run and run." The fifth one said, "I'm ready for some fun!" Then, oooooooo went the wind. And, out went the lights. And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight! This week, we learned about the letter Cc! We read, My Cc Book. As you read it at home with your families, see if you can find all the C's with your magic pointing finger. On the smart board, we read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff. We learned how to write an uppercase and lowercase C. Uppercase C: Big C curve Lowercase C: Magic c Since we loved the book so much, we made a plate with milk and a chocolate chip cookie! We read the book If You Give a Cat a Cupcake also written by Laura Numeroff. Then, we used the letter Cc to make a cat! We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. During story time, we each had our very own picture to help tell the story. Then, we used both math and literacy skills to make name caterpillars! In our letter Cc sensory box, we enjoyed finding things that begin with the letter Cc: cotton balls, corn, carrot, cantaloupe, and more. We are crazy for Cc!!! This week, we began to work on the letter Bb! We read our own My Bb Book. "See the...boat, bus, bird, balloon, bee." We made Bb is for Balloon crafts. We read the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We learned about the lifecycle of a butterfly on BrainPOP Jr on the smart board. Then, we learned how to write an uppercase and lowercase Bb, and made Butterflies! Uppercase B: - Straight line down - Little curve - Little curve Lowercase b: - Dive down - Swim up and over - Around bump We found lots of Bb words in our letter Bb sensory box! Bird Bugs Birdseed Blue Bird Banana Bread We read the book Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Then, a big brown bear appeared in our classroom! He is our new reading buddy. We made a Bb is for Button craft. We worked on counting with one-to-one correspondence by sticking at least ten buttons on the uppercase B. Then, we worked on writing our name. Today, the Morris Fire Department visited James Morris School. Children learned that if there is ever a fire, we need to GET OUT, AND STAY OUT! Students also learned that if our clothing ever caught on fire, we need to STOP, DROP, and ROLL! We all practiced how to stop, drop, and roll. Then, we got to see all the vehicles and equipment. It was so neat! |
