In February, some of our pre-K learning themes will include:
Valentine's Day Dental Health Shapes Colors Making Things Little learners have math so many math SUPERPOWER skills!!!!
Students have been working very hard on various pre-K math skills! We work on math during whole group time, and small group learning centers. Students love to play math games with peers. Some of the things that SUPER MATHEMATICIANS are working on in pre-K include: SORT! Separating objects into groups according to their similarities. We can sort by color, shape, size and type. What can you sort at home? COUNT! Counting objects one at a time, and remembering how many. Also, counting out loud up to 20. NUMBERS! Recognizing and identifying numerals, and putting numerals in the correct order. SUBITIZE! Recognizing how many without counting. You can practice this using dice or dominos at home! COLORS! SHAPES! One of the stories that we read this week was Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? Students worked on story retelling using pictures of the animals in the story. At the sensory learning center, students are enjoying arctic-themed materials such as polar bears, penguins, bubble wrap, foam pieces and cotton balls (as the ice and snow). At the art center, students painted a snowy arctic scene, with a polar bear. Click on the link below to read the story if you don't have it at home.
"J" is for jellyfish, jeans, jumping rope, jellybeans, jell-o, jet... what else can you think of that begins with "J"? Does your name begin with letter "J"?
How to write letter "J": 1. Mr. Smiley reminds us to start at the top! 2. Big line down 3. Turn 4. Little line across the top We LOVE to read in pre-K!!! We read in the reading center and at the big rug. We also love reading as a whole group for story time! Students also look forward to story time with Mrs. Fodor, and choosing a new library book to borrow.
During art special, we experimented with watercolor paint. Students could paint whatever they wanted!
We read The Mitten by Jan Brett, and worked on story retelling using a story board in school. Preschoolers made their own paper mitten and all the animals in the story to practice story retelling at home!
During learning centers, students made beautiful marble painted mittens at the art center! At the math learning center this week, students played a game called "Gumball Grab"! Little learners loved playing "Gumball Grab," and it strengthened lots of skills including: fine motor, number identification, counting with one-to-one correspondence, color identification and social skills. Students learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. through books, activities and discussion. We learned about his dream for equality, and talked about how our differences make us special. We read a nonfiction book about Martin Luther King, Jr. on Epicbooks.com on the smart board, The Crayon Box That Talked and a poem called, "With My Own Two Hands." At the art learning center, students colored a hand picture with various skin tone crayons. Also, students brought home a MLK mini book to read at home with their families.
