We are working on the letter Aa this week! We read many apple stories including: Apples A to Z by Margaret McNamara, The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall, and Chicka Chicka 123 by Bill Martin Jr. We read our own "My Aa Book," which included an alligator, astronaut, apple, and alphabet! Students used fine motor skills to tear paper, and create an apple. Then, we put our apples on a tree in our classroom. We learned that people pick apples in the fall. We tasted all different types of apples including: Macintosh, Gala, Cortland, and Honey Crisp! First, we used our sense of smell, then we tasted the apples, and used words to describe them. Many preschool friends liked Honey Crisp apples. We painted using apples! While stamping with apples, students found out that they can make different shapes, and mix new colors. We even made applesauce! We worked together to combine apples, cinnamon, and sugar. After the ingredients cooked in a crock pot, we tasted our applesauce. It was so good!!!

In preparation for the Fall Harvest Luncheon, we explored our garden today. First, we read the book My Garden by Kevin Henkes at story time. Then, we went outside to our gardens at James Morris School to pick curly kale! After it was all picked, we brought it back to our classroom, and picked all the kale leaves off of the stems. The curly kale will be used to make kale chips. We can't wait to try them on Monday! I am very proud of the preschoolers for working hard and having fun! If you hadn't noticed, we have a pet beta fish in our class. We voted on a name for him. The name choices were: Flounder (from The Little Mermaid), Jaws, and Bubbles (from Finding Nemo). We used math to graph our votes, and counted what name had the most votes. The most preschool friends voted for the name Flounder!!! Yay, we're so happy he has a name now!
International Dot Day is this Thursday, September 15th!!! In preschool, we have been doing many dot activities this week to get ready for the big day! We noticed that a dot is shaped like a circle, which is the shape we are working on this month. We really enjoyed reading The Dot by Peter Reynolds, and watching it on our Smart Board. You can watch The Dot on your computer at home: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5mGeR4AQdM. We are watching The Dot on our Smart Board. We took a field trip to Mrs. Sweet's room for art enrichment, and made dot art! It was so much fun!!! We played the game I Spy a Dot! Then, we decided to take pictures of all the dots and circles that we found. They are everywhere!!!
We went on a field trip to Miss Powell's classroom to do music enrichment with the Kindergartners! Miss Powell taught us how to use instruments while telling the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. We learned how to use veggie shakers, and play the drum!! It was fun!! We can't wait to do music enrichment with Miss Powell again.
During story time, we have been enjoying Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. We have been singing a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom song, retelling the story using the magnet board, and exploring the discovery table filled with sand and letters! We used a variety of materials to decorate all the letters of our name! We love Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Today, our morning and afternoon preschool classes made a preschool promise. We talked about what we want our classroom to be like, and made a list of the most important rules. Then, we all raised our right hands (the one with a smiley face stamped on it) and said the preschool promise! Whenever we are doing everything we promised, we will feel really good about ourselves, and earn lots of warm fuzzies!!
The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn was our favorite book the first week of school! We made a craft for our parents based on the book. We traced a handprint, and put a heart (kiss) in the middle. On the back, there is a special poem that read: It's my first day of school And The Kissing Hand is what we read. It's about a raccoon Who did just as his parents said. Like the raccoon's first day at school I was scared and a little shy. But because of what you said I was brave and I got by. All through the year I'll make more things for you. So, as I change and as I learn You'll see my growth too! We were so proud of our Kissing Hand crafts, that we decided to show them in the Bethlehem Fair junior art exhibit! |
